Sergeant John Grey

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present. It is possible that he was the John Gray [sic] shown on the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Roll of Honour as living at 16a Church Street, Bangor, who served in the Army Service Corps as a driver, listed with Robert James Gray, who served in the Royal Irish Rifles (killed in action 30 March 1918) and John Gray (jnr), who also served in the Army Service Corps.

John Grey enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 1 or 2 September 1914 (No.1092). On 1 May 1915 he embarked for France with D Squadron, which at the time was serving as divisional cavalry to the 51st Division.

Grey transferred to the Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) on 19 November 1915 (No. M2/153934). He remained with that regiment throughout the war. On 6 June 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
